2 Day Course

Aims
This course is designed to bring explorationists up to date with the latest concepts on Salt Tectonics and Sedimentation on continental margins. We aim to bridge the gap between academia and the oil industry, by explaining the basic physical processes of salt flow and turbidite flow and sedimentation, then applying this to solve real exploration problems.
Our focus is international (non-US) and reflects our personal experience of twenty years in frontier exploration in the Central and Southern Atlantic margins, Northern Europe and the Middle East. Physical demonstrations, numerical modelling simulations, and seismic workshops will be an integral part of the course.

Day 1

Salt Tectonics: Introduction and Physical Principles.

8.30. Session 1. Concepts of fluid mechanics. Relative importance of buoyancy,
differential loading, and regional tectonics. Physical modelling demonstration of salt tectonics. DW.

9.30. Session 2. Salt flow-internal structure of salt diapirs. Faults through salt.

Salt diapirism

10.15. Session 3. Review of numerical and physical modelling of salt diapirism.
Growth and mechanics of salt diapirism. Investigation of erosion effects on
diapir growth. Basement controls on diapir triggering. ID

11.30. Session 5. Seismic workshop session on salt diapirs in extensional settings.
Examples from Nova Scotia, Morocco, Santos, and Espirito Santo, Brazil. ID

Salt Tectonics on Continental Margins

Course fee includes tuition, full colour course manual of 200 pages, CD Rom with course notes and newly developed user-friendly software for modelling salt tectonics and sedimentation, lunches and coffees on both days.
